You should feel comfortable asking questions at any point in the trial process. We’ve compiled an initial list of questions you can use to start conversations with healthcare professionals and the people in your life.

Getting started: questions to ask yourself

  • What do I hope to gain from participating in a clinical trial?
  • Does joining a study align with my values, beliefs, and preferences?
  • How much risk am I comfortable taking?
  • Do I have the time and flexibility to take part in a study?
  • Would I need to give up anything to participate, and am I okay with that?
  • Would I need help with child care or care for a loved one while I participate?

Talking with your healthcare team or study staff

  • What are the possible benefits and risks of participating?
  • How would the risks and benefits of a trial treatment compare with my current treatment?
  • How might joining a clinical trial affect my daily routine?
  • How often will I need to visit the trial site?
  • Who will be part of my care team if I participate in a clinical trial?
  • Can I get the materials in my preferred language? Is a translator available if I need one?
  • What costs will I be responsible for, if any?
  • What happens if I lose health insurance coverage while I am participating in the trial?
  • Have other participants had challenges with insurance coverage for trial-related care?

Talking with your health insurance provider

  • What costs will you cover if I participate in a clinical trial?
  • Will you cover routine care that the trial requires?
  • Is care at the trial site considered in-network?
  • If I have medical issues or side effects related to the trial, will you cover those treatment costs?

Talking with trusted friends and family

  • What are your thoughts on me joining a clinical trial?
  • Can you come to doctor’s visits with me to help take notes and ask questions?
  • Would you be able to help with things like childcare, pet care, or errands while I go to appointments?
  • Would you be willing to drive me to or from appointments if I need it?
